His Name is Mighty God

Discussion Questions

  1. Can you give an example of what/who one would consider "mighty" today? Given their understanding of "mighty" (e.g. David and his mighty men, Sampson, Gideon), would Isaiah's original audience have considered the example given by you to be "mighty" as well?
  2. The child and son given to us, who  is called "Mighty God", came and did what no other mighty men could do. He came to deliver us from sin and death. Thus, we are no longer enslaved by them. However, we sometimes still choose to live under the slavery of  law and sin. Can you give some examples of this in your life (one example would be how we constantly choose to be defined by what the world considers "successful" and "perfect" on social media)? How can the fact that the Mighty God has freed us  help us to move away from this?
  3. The term "Mighty God" is not merely a title given to Jesus. It is who he is. How does knowing that our Lord is the all-powerful God of the universe help us in our life's journey?
  4. We live in the period between D-Day and VE-Day, between the "already" and "not yet". The Lord Jesus is not only the one who was and who is, but He is the one who is to come. How does the assurance of the second coming of Jesus give us hope and comfort as we live in this fallen world?

Let us take some time to meditate upon the great and awesome works of our Mighty God, and pray for one another.
