Discussion Questions

  1. What ideas, emotions, or concepts come to your mind when you read about the cities of refuge?
  2. Why do you think these cities are important? What is the significance of the number of these cities and their geographical position?
  3. Besides the allocation of the cities of refuge, what other aspect of Joshua 20 highlights Yahweh’s justice?
  4. How do you reconcile with the idea that the cities of refuge are a place for fugitives to hide, while the avenger of blood would fail to fulfil his role as a kinsman-redeemer? (You may refer to Num 35 or Deut 19)
  5. How can Christians today derive the principles from Joshua 20 about Yahweh’s justice and re-apply it in ‘mercy ministry’?
